Non-fiction, illustrated book, 5+ years

Following the success of the Migrations project and book, Tobias Hickey and the team at the International Centre for the Picture Book in Society at Worcester University have developed a similar project on ocean life.

Illustrators from around the world were invited to send an illustration on a postcard with text, address and stamp on the other side. These form the basis of a travelling exhibition. Otter-Barry Books have again produced a beautiful book in a postcard format, selecting 50 of these illustrations. These are presented with a moving foreword from Peter Thomson, the UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy for the Ocean and himself a Fijian.

Arranged in three sections – Celebrating the Ocean / The Danger to the Ocean / Take Action for the Ocean, the entries are beautiful, thought-provoking and stimulating. It would be a great starting point for work on this topic with young people. The illustration styles are varied and the diversity of the participation is reflected in the various viewpoints reflected. Some are stimulated by factual writing, some by poetry, some by personal reflection, but all share a passion and commitment to the future of the ocean.

This is a beautiful small book with a punchy message. Proceeds from the sale of the book will be shared between Greenpeace International and IBBY International.

Further details can be found on the website of the International Centre for the Picture Book in Society (ICPBS), and more of the illustrations on the ICPBS Instagram page.
