A few children’s authors become enduring household names. Astrid Lindgren is one, and Pippi Longstocking, her best-known creation, continues to leap off the book shelves.
Now Lindgren joins the already extensive collection Little People, BIG Dreams published by Frances Lincoln Books. Aimed at KS1 readers these biographies are neatly and attractively packaged, pulling out salient points to attract a young audience.
Lindgren is a particularly good example. Here is a person who did not need to go into outer space or win the Nobel Prize for Science. She is a character whom many could emulate, indeed recognise. The text is concise and readable; the font is clear and accessible. Linzi Hunter’s lively illustrations bring an attractive immediacy to the whole while the brief ‘factual’ biography accompanied by photographs of Lindgren at the end, underlines the storytelling arc of the main narrative.
This is a very welcome addition to an already wide-ranging series.
