Fiction, picture book, 3+ years
A young girl asks her grandmother questions about the world around them as they go out and about in the city and to the airport – the kinds of questions children always ask about how things work.
Eventually, it is revealed that the grandmother is an engineer –a much-needed role model, a young active working grandparent! Her answers and explanations are interspersed with interesting snippets about famous engineers and inventions, some less well-known than others.
Shini Somara is London-born with Sri Lankan parents and is an engineer and broadcaster who brings all her enthusiasm for the subject to this book.Nadja Sarell is an illustrator who lives in Finland and has a lively quirky style, which has a lightness of touch but is able to explain technical concepts quite simply.
Shortlisted for the SLA Information Book Award in the 0-7 category.
