Picture book, 5-7 years
The title at first seems to tell readers that Otto is the cleverest, most important dog in the world, but we eventually understand that is not quite what it means!
Otto has a list of things he loves, but above all he loves his lovely comfy basket, where he can snooze whenever he feels like it. He is a very kind dog, and so when his doggy friend Lupin follows him home one night, kind Otto offers him the chance to snooze with him in his very comfy bed. Otto’s other doggy friends soon hear about the comfy basket and night by night they pile in, until Otto is left rather squashed up in the bottom of the bed! So clever Otto comes up with a brilliant idea, but that isn’t as good as he thought it would be. Instead he… but I’m not going to tell you how he solves the problem – you’ll have to read the book!
The illustrations are wonderful, so accurately drawn in each dog’s own body and character. A perfect book about kindness and sharing, and re-thinking what to do when things at first don’t work perfectly.
OTTO The TOP Dog is a story which needs to be read and re-read time and again, to ensure that young (and old) readers can enjoy every wonderful doggy illustration over and over again, and that the book is cherished time after time! Catherine Rayner already has a string of exceptional books for young book lovers, very nearly two dozen in which she has written and illustrated the stories. She also has supplied the illustrations for many other books for children and these have won awards. Rayner has been nominated six times for the CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal, and won that prestigious award with Harris Finds His Feet in 2009.
