Singad is an artist from the Bhil tribal community who works as a gardener in a museum.

In his breaks he enjoyed looking at the trees in the garden and started drawing them on long sheets of page, approximately half A4 longways. This size helped him to capture the height of the tree and to focus in closely and has been reflected in the book production.

He has created 12 extraordinary images of trees and the birds who live or feed in them. Each image is a mini-world, a mini-habitat, and the text points out the specifics of the relationship between bird, tree, the surrounding rural community and any stories connected to them.

Though he is trained in the Bhil tradition, Singad has the imaginative freedom to break out from any artistic constraints to create his own style, all inspired by actual observation of the natural world. His use of colour is from his own visual imagination, not naturalistic, though the accompanying text includes his commentary on his choices.

Each image is a rich visual narrative, which conceives of the tree in relation to the birds that seek it, as shelter and for food, demonstrating the inter-relationships.

This is another inspiring book from Tara Books, always a joy to see what they are producing. It can be ordered through Bounce, some specialist bookshops or direct from Tara.
